Sales Resume Project Brief
This technical sales engineer and project administrator had struck out on his own with an entrepreneurial venture totally unrelated to his previous career path. He had done quite well for many years, but was ready to return to traditional employment in his previous career path. This technology sales resume helped him to do that.
In a case like this, it is all about how you choose to focus your resume. What do you emphasize? What do you downplay? These decisions should be made strategically to support your target. In this case, we focused on qualifications and experiences most relevant for technology sales engineering and project administration.
It is not always wise to emphasize your experience as an entrepreneur when trying to return to the corporate world. Of course, many times the skills you used as an entrepreneur/small business owner are relevant. The problem is that a prospective employer may worry that 1) you are too independent and will have trouble adjusting to traditional employment or 2) are just biding time and trying to land a job and collect a paycheck until the next best entrepreneurial opportunity comes along.
The solution is a compromise that shows the pros of your experience without emphasizing the potential cons. This sales resume, for example, describes his position inhis most recent entrepreneurial venture as “principal.” This is 100% honest without necessarily calling attention to the facy that this was his own business.
Other experience that we decided supported his target was included in a separate and undated section at the end of the resume. This is a helpful strategy for older job seekers who do not want to date their resume too far in the past.
