While simply designed, this example business development resume for a sales director and business development manager in the life sciences, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries stands out in part because of the graphic in the resume header, which implies “growth.” Using graphical elements and color in resumes has grown in popularity and becomes more and more common every year.

Used appropriately, graphics and color can really make your resume pop. But don’t just include graphics to be flashy. They must relate in some way to your personal brand or the key points you are making in your resume. This example business development resume passes that test.

Bulleted accomplishments are easy to read with the bolding and underlines and the simple bar at the left of each section of accomplishments makes them stand out more. Lots of white space helps make the resume even easier to read.

Great design doesn’t have to be complex or fancy. A simple design like this is very effective and will ensure you stand out from the competition.

Note the earlier experience section at the end. This is a good way to include older experience that is still relevant but too dated to detail on your resume. As the resume goes back in time, the descriptions get shorter. This leaves more space for current, more relevant experiences.

Another technique to note in this resume is the way in which the bulleted achievements are written. Most of them use the “front loading” technique in which the sentence starts with the result followed by the actions that produced it.  This helps to call more attention to your proven value add, and it is this value add that will give you a real competitive advantage in the job market.
