Quick Cover Letter Writing Tip: The sample cover letter above illustrates a job search technique that many aren’t familiar with. This isn’t a job search technique for everyone, but accomplished managers and executives often receive great referrals from venture capital and private equity firms. This sample cover letter uses a strategy that we’ve found to be very effective when contacting VC firms. Rather than asking about openings within the portfolio companies, use the letter to introduce yourself, begin to establish rapport, and then ask for advice and introductions–exactly as you would with your own networking contacts. Do you have a proven ability to make your employers money? How about a track record of saving money? Do you have experience in start-ups or turnarounds? These are all things that you should emphasize within your cover letter.  Additionally, if your job search is not confidential, make it clear within the cover letter that the recipient should feel free to pass along your resume.

I just want to let you know that this week I had four interviews and 3 job offers! One is with my mentor's company, XXXXX, another with XXXXX, and a third with XXXXX. The salary ranges are from $80-$100k. I'm deliberating now about my options, and will start "negotiations" this afternoon. Two job offers came on the same day (yesterday). I start August 4th as an assistant PM working first on a 1.5 billion (with a "b") dollar proposal, then off to the job site in September, working either on the XXXXXX renovation project or various cultural projects with musuems, libraries, etc. in XXXXX. Starting salary $90k with a review and increase to $95 by the end of the year. If I finish my PMP and LEED certifications, I will get an additional $3k for each certification.
